T
he Washington State Department of
Labor and Industries issued citations
to Alaska Airlines and its ground han-
dling contractor, Menzies Aviation,
for health and safety violations. Multiple
inspections found unsafe working conditions
in Alaska Airlines and Menzies Aviation's
operations on airport premises.
Inspectors found that "Alaska Air-
lines did not provide safety devices, safe-
guards, work practices, processes and the
means to make the workplace safe from
hazards that were causing, or likely to
cause, serious physical harm to Menzies
ramp agent employees who handle cargo
and passenger baggage for Alaska Airlines
at Sea-Tac Airport, Seattle, Washington."
The state's Department of Labor & In-
dustries also found that "Menzies em-
ployees have approximately a four times
higher injury rate than other employees
in their risk class." Menzies was fned a
total of $62,000 concerning 16 violations
of state worker health and safety laws.
In response, Menzies issued an
across-the-board wage hike for Sea-
Tac employees to $15.24 per hour and
said the company "remains optimistic"
that the citations would be reversed
upon appeal:
"The Company believes that many of
the citations were inappropriately issued
as they relate to wider airport infrastruc-
ture issues over which it has no control,"
a Menzies representative said in a release
announcing the wage hike.
